Description
This book has two purposes:
1.To introduce the reader to the essential principles of Buddhism.
2.To describe how to meditate in a way that anyone can understand and follow; basic meditation
exercises for beginners are included.
In short, it is the answer to those who ask What is Buddhism all about? and What is Buddhist meditation?
Buddhism is essentially a collection of skilful methods of working with the mind. If we understand and apply these to our lives, we would unfold our inherent ability to experience inner peace, compassion and wisdom by developing the basic potential of our minds.
This potential is within each of us and anyone can realise it by making the effort. Buddhists therefore have no sense of being different or unique.
The study and practice of Buddhism are not matters of custom. We do not have to sit in a particular way or wear special clothes, or appear in a certain way. Such superficial matters are of no importance.
The teachings are concerned with the diminishing and eventual elimination of our negative patterns, not changing our superficial appearance.
This book helps to guide us along that path.
Reviews:
I welcome this revised 10th anniversary edition, and pray that Rob Nairn and Tranquil Mind will continue to guide beings everywhere on their path of inner peace, clarity and compassion.
—DR AKONG TULKU RINPOCHE, founder and president Rokpa International
Rob has a unique ability to penetrate into the psychology of meditation and explain its capacity to transform the quality of human consciousness. Tranquil Mind is therefore more than just another book on Buddhist meditation. It connects traditional eastern insights into the nature of mind to western needs to find calmness and clarity in an increasingly bewildering world.
—LOUIS VAN LOON, founder of The Buddhist Retreat Centre, Ixopo
Here is Buddhism in a nutshell.
—SHAMBHALA PUBLICATIONS, USA
A wonderfully simple and clear introduction to Buddhist meditation – it touches all the bases.
—JOSEPH GOLDSTEIN, author & founder Insight Meditation Society, Barre, Massachusetts.
As a meditation instructor Rob is simply unsurpassed. Spiritual seekers from any faith tradition will find this book a valuable resource.
—SISTER ELLEN FINLAY, Anglican contemplative nun, Oklahoma, USA
